The braking system is one of the most important safety features of any car. It slows down or stops the vehicle when you apply the brakes. There are two main types of brakes:
- Disc Brakes: Found in most modern vehicles, disc brakes use friction from brake pads to slow down the car. The pads press against a spinning disc (rotor), generating heat and slowing the wheel’s motion.
- Drum Brakes: More common in older vehicles or in the rear of some cars, drum brakes use shoes that press outward against a spinning drum.
Additional components of the braking system include:
- Brake Fluid: Hydraulic fluid that transmits force from the brake pedal to the brake components.
- Anti-lock Braking System (ABS): Prevents the wheels from locking up during hard braking, improving vehicle control and safety.
